Samsung, HTC Epitomize Challenge to Differentiate Android Smartphones

Android-supporting smartphone makers have vowed to make fewer but more distinctive devices in an effort to compete in a market that already offers business users and consumers many different options. Increasing numbers of smartphones, in increasing sizes& not to mention names that echo or build on earlier models& can make the options seem a blur of deep-black displays, curving design work and multicore processors. How can a user differentiate? Which is the right smartphone to get? Here, eWEEK brought together three newer Android phones, each running 4.0, or Ice Cream Sandwich (ICS), and capable of running on a Long-Term Evolution (LTE) network. While each has features that bring the others to mind, these smartphones also have details that set them apart. The HTC One X went on sale on the AT&T network May 6 for $199. The Samsung Galaxy S III was introduced May 3 and will arrive in the United States this summer, though carrier news and pricing are still unknown. And from the CTIA Wireless show in New Orleans, which started May 7, Verizon introduced the HTC Droid Incredible 4G LTE, which will arrive in "the coming weeks" at a price that’s yet to be determined. Are these phones distinct enough? Would a user switch networks for one? Alternately, could a $50 price tag, or possibly a waning interest in Android, get you to consider the Samsung Focus 2? Running Microsoft Windows Mobile 7.5, it was also introduced May 7. – …

Interlocked is a three-dimensional brain teaser

interlocked

Back when I was a kid, I used to love crafting ornate puzzle boxes out of Lego. There would be just one way to open the box, by carefully shifting and rotating a bunch of pieces. Well, either that, or breaking the box in frustration.

Interlocked takes that spirit and turns it into a beautiful Flash game. It’s a good thing the soundtrack is soothing, because the game itself can get pretty frustrating.

At the start of each level, you’re presented with a box built out of blocks in different colors. You can click and drag the mouse to rotate the box any which way. Once you decide you want to shift a part of the box, hit SPACE to switch into “move” mode. You can then click any part of the box and drag it. Of course, you can only move a part as long as nothing is in its way. So it becomes a matter of understanding how the box is built, and what parts you need to move around so you could eventually take the box apart.

It’s a tricky, difficult game, but it’s a great brain teaser — and definitely a keeper.

Mitoza is a fun, freaky Web toy with an artistic look

mitoza

While not a game per se, I found Mitoza intriguing enough to spend quite some time with it. You start off with a seed, and are then presented with two choices: you can either click a flower pot, or click a cute little birdie.

If you click the flower pot, a flower pot appears and the seed is planted inside. You’re then presented with two further choices — a water can or a bottle of fertilizer. Each choice you make causes your creation to morph, and presents you with two other choices.

There’s no winning or losing, really. Each “game” usually lasts around four or five choices, at which point the plant/animal dies in some creative (but not too gruesome) way. At this point you instantly start over with a new seed.

The graphics are captivating; the whole thing has a cinematic feel to it, with a bit of artificial camera shake added for style.

All in all, it’s a fun, peaceful way to spend a few minutes, and it might even make you think a little bit while you’re at it.

We managed to catch not one, but two of Sprint’s execs yesterday at CTIA Wireless 2012: Director of Product Marketing John Tudhope and VP of Product David Owens. While our discussion was centered primarily around the company’s announcements at the show — Sprint Guardian, HTC’s EVO V 4G for Virgin Mobile and HTC’s EVO Design 4G for Boost Mobile — we were able to ask a few questions about the state of Sprint’s LTE deployment and the associated value proposition. Want to find out more? Take a look at our video interview.

Samsung outs new Series 5 550P notebook in the UK, Ivy Bridge and numeric keypad onboard

Samsung outs new Series 5 550P notebook in the UK, Ivy Bridge and numeric keypad onboard

We saw a lot of things back at CES, and from the PC makers, it was mainly new Ultrabooks. Samsung, however, did present a pair of “regular” notebooks, and it looks like they’re just about to stretch their legs in the UK. The Series 5 550P is available in 15- and 17-inch varieties, sporting 1366 x 768 and 1600 x 900 displays respectively. Calling the shots will be quad-core Ivy Bridge Core i7 chips supported by 8GB of RAM. Graphics are dished up by a 2GB GeForce GT 650M, and there’s a Blu-ray optical drive plus capacity for up to 2TB of storage. Like the Series 7, sound is handled by integrated JBL speakers complete with “Max Bass Boost” subwoofer — crikey! Lower specification models will also be available (swapping the Blu-ray for DVD, and using shared graphics) when they hit UK stores this month.

Xamarin ports Android from Java to C#

Xamarin has ported Android to C# in an effort to improve its own development tools and show that the OS doesn’t have to be dependent on Java.

Development tools vendor Xamarin was started in May last year to take care of the Mono project, an open source implementation of the .Net framework, after Attachmate decided to drop it following its deal with Novell, where Mono had its home previously.

Konstruct for iOS creates generative augmented reality art with your voice

Konstruct generative augmented reality art for iOS

If you have an artistic temperament, but you weren’t blessed with steady hands or an eye for color, Konstruct might be the app for you. Not only does the iPhone app let you produce generative art using words, warbles and whistles, but it also uses augmented reality to bring your artistic creation to life.

To get started, you first need to print out the Konstruct marker and place it wherever you’d like to create your AR sculpture — it could be on your living room wall, or on the floor of your bathroom, it doesn’t matter. Open the app, point your iPhone at the marker, and start making some noises! Once you’re done, you can save your creation, or simply wipe the slate clean and start again.

The volume of your voice affects the size of the shapes that are drawn on the screen, and you can move your head around to alter the path of your ‘brush’ — but to change the shape of your brush or modify the color palette you have to use a menu. Without knowledge of the app’s internal workings, it’s hard to say what the actual difference between whistling, talking and singing is — and judging by the developer’s affinity for whistling in the demo video (after the break), the app probably doesn’t perform that much analysis on your input.

Still, Konstruct is just a prototype! A later version could do away with menus and rely entirely on the location, tonality, quality and amplitude of your voice — and judging by the the words of the developer, James Alliban, there is definitely more in store for Konstruct: “The idea of transforming entire cities into user generated virtual art galleries really appeals to me. I see Konstruct as an early prototype that will hopefully be realised in this form in the future.”

Download Konstruct for free from the App Store (iPhone 3GS and 4 only)

[Thanks to Richard for the tip!]

Microsoft officially offering Xbox 360 4GB console for $99, two-year Live Gold subscription required

xbox 360 subsidzed deal

Whoa, Nelly! As rumored, Microsoft is indeed shattering the home console pricing paradigm by trying something that US wireless carriers have been doing for years. As of now, the official Microsoft Store is hosting up a coupon that’ll enable prospective Xbox buyers to snag a 4GB console bundle for just $99 (a $200 savings versus the outright unit)… so long as you agree to pay $14.99 per month for two solid years. That monthly fee — which amounts to some $360 over the 24 month term — gets you on the Xbox Live network with a Gold subscription, but remember, Microsoft’s maintaining the ability to “terminate this offer at any time.” Looking to score one yourself? Hit the source link and visit that “Find a store” icon; hopefully there’s a B&M Microsoft Store near your neck of the woods.

Update: In case you’re curious, yes, early termination fees will apply if you cut out of your two-year deal early. It’s a prorated affair, with users asked to pay less the longer they maintain the contract. Those who part ways after only a month will have to pay $250, while those who cancel with just a month remaining will owe $12. All told, someone buying this and keeping true to the contract terms will pay $459 for the bundle and Live access, whereas those buying outright could snag it for $420 (or less, if scouring the web for cheaper Live subscriptions). The full ETF schedule is shown after the break.

Update II: Joystiq has confirmed that, for now, this is simply a pilot program. These machines will be sold only through the 16 US-based Microsoft Stores, and we can only assume the marketing and finance folks at the company will be watching reception like hawks.

Chain-Link Confidentiality: A HIPAA-Like Approach To Online Privacy

chain_link_linksAs we put more of our private information online and entrust it to web services, privacy breaches become almost inevitable. One major problem with online privacy is that there is really no enforceable chain of confidentiality. So when a third-party service makes your information available to another party, things can get complicated. A new paper by Samford University law professor Woodrow Harzog argues that traditional privacy laws aren’t the best ways to protect private information online. Instead, he suggests an approach that more like the U.S. HIPAA rules that currently govern how private health information can be shared between your health provider and third parties. The system he proposes would be based on established principles in confidentiality and contract law.

Facebook Messenger update makes it even harder to blow people off

Facebook Messenger update makes it even harder to blow people off

Your friends just don’t get it. While they’re still bumming around in Nikes, dorms and doomed relationships, your life has recently become more serious. That’s why you sometimes need to hide from their constant, mindless barrage of messages, and also why you probably won’t install the newly updated Facebook Messenger app v1.7. In line with FB’s “mobile first” strategy, it debuts key new functions on iOS and Android, including instant and compulsory “seen by” read receipts as well as optional “sent from” notifications. So, in addition to knowing how aloof you’ve become, they’ll be able to track you down and slap your face.

A sneak peek at the next version of Android Market and Music app

Android Honeycomb'ish smartphone Music appUpdate: Tech From 10 seems to be offline — but we have lots of images and a hands-on review if you want to see what the new Music app is like.

In what is probably a bit of a big-G whoopsie, the folks at Tech From 10 woke up to find a new, test version of Android Market installed on their Galaxy S.

Visually, the new version is almost identical. The carousel of featured apps has been updated slightly, and apps now have a ‘Content rating,’ but that’s it (image after the break). The interesting bit, however, is the inclusion of alpha and beta apps — most notably, there’s a new version of the Music app, which looks like a scaled-down version of the Android 3.0 Honeycomb Music app (see right).

Also available from the test Android Market is ‘Google Gallery 3D New 10.2′, ‘Google – Camera v12′ and ‘Google Desk Clock 10′ — but, curiously, all of the apps refused to launch on Tech From 10′s Galaxy S (Vibrant) smartphone. Are they Honeycomb apps? Or, more likely, are they destined for the next Android smartphone OS, Ice Cream?

If you want to try out the new Honeycombish Music app, Tech From 10 has made the APK available for download. You can also download the three Google apps, if you want to have a poke around.

Verizon takes the lead on text to 911 services

Verizon takes the lead on text to 911 services

The FCC first outlined its intention to allow texting to emergency services back in 2010, and since then despite more talk of accepting photo and video messages, nothing official came to be. This week, however, Verzion has taken the initiative, and announced its own plans to enable text to 911 for its customers. Working with TeleCommunication Systems, the big red hopes that it can facilitate the sending of SMS messages to emergency call-centers as soon as early 2013. Texting isn’t just about adding communication options, it also provides a valuable tool to the deaf, hard of hearing and situations where talking is dangerous, or not possible. The service will use existing CDMA and SMS networks, and therefore should be available to all customers once finally rolled out.
